Unreal Engine 5.5 MegaLights Tutorial | Boost FPS with One Setting!
Enable MegaLights in Unreal Engine 5.5 with a Post Process Volume to boost FPS and optimize lighting. Quick and effective performance improvement for your project.
Hi this is Rambod with a quick Unreal tip and today we unlock the MegaLights feature in Unreal Engine 5.5. This option gives you a big performance boost without changing your level design. Let’s go step by step.
1) Make sure you are on the right version
MegaLights requires Unreal Engine 5.5.1 or newer. Check your engine version before you continue.
2) Add or locate a Post Process Volume
Your level needs a Post Process Volume.
- If you already have one, select it.
- If not, drag one into the map from the Place Actors panel.
This volume is where we will enable the MegaLights option.
3) Check your baseline performance
Before enabling the feature, take note of your current frame rate. In this demo the scene was running at around 80 FPS with more than 300 active lights in the outliner. It is a heavy setup, so a good test case.
4) Enable MegaLights
- Select the Post Process Volume.
- In the Details panel, search for MegaLights.
- Tick the box to enable it. That is all you need.
5) Compare the results
After enabling MegaLights, the frame rate jumped from 80 FPS to about 100 FPS. That is roughly a 20 FPS gain just by toggling one setting. Lighting quality remains consistent but the rendering workload is much lighter.
Wrap up
You now know how to use MegaLights to boost performance in Unreal Engine 5.5. Simple, fast, and effective. Use this feature whenever you have a scene with lots of lights and you need extra frames.
